Phase 2!

The second phase of the Blog reflection is due within a week the implementation of the micro lesson. The reflection should be based on your experiences as well as feedback from your classmates. Each numbered item should be a separate post in your blog.

  1. Instructional Decisions/Teaching: Discuss the implementation process and describe
    • What you did and learned from the teaching/facilitating process
    • How alignment to goals and objectives was maintained
    • Modifications made for individual need

I learned that it is very important to tell my students the vocabulary  terms when being taught new content in order for my students to best understand what is being taught.  Showing examples of what needs to be done is important so the students are not confused.   I learned that monitoring my students and making sure that they are all understanding the material is key to a successful lesson.  I learned that  incorporating technology into a lesson can be both easy and effective.  It really engages the students and allowed them to really show me their understanding of the material.

I was able to follow the objectives by starting telling my students what we will be learning about and then going into the lesson and to finish up with an assessment that aligned with the objective.  Both of the other members in my group were engaged and thought the lesson was very successful and that first grade students would have a fun time creating their own assessment using the technology.

I  made modifications for my student who is special needs by having their one on one aide come in and work with the student to help and make sure the student is understanding the work.  I also was sure to go over and check with the student often to make sure they were not frustrated.

  1. Assessment of Learning: Describe the evidence you have that indicates
    • Your students' level of success in achieving the lessons goals
    • The level of success you had in teaching the lesson
      • How do your individual reflections support this?
      • How do the comments from your classmates support this?

Both Ruth and Kim said that they enjoyed my lesson and that it was fun to be able to work with different manipulatives, (pennies, pasta and paper clips) and could see a first grade class enjoying non-standard measurement.  We discussed how we could see the students going home and showing their family what they learned and demonstrating it at home. The objective was met, and I feel like overall the lesson was very successful.  One thing that I would do differently would be to show more examples before I let the students go ahead and begin measuring.

  1. Assessment Examples: At least 2 digital artifacts that:
    • Demonstrate what you or your students (peers) have created as a result of your lesson
    • Are referred to as you answer #2 (Assessment of Learning)

My students used the paint application on the computer to create an assessment by creating two images for them to measure with all three of the non standard measurement and then once they have completed their worksheet, they switched with a partner  and completed their partners.  While the students were doing the assessment.  Both of the students received a 100% on their assessments.

Phase 1

Phase 1-reflecting on Micro Lesson 1 only J DUE by July 3rd by midnight
The first phase of the Blog reflection is due prior to the implementation of your Micro Lesson. Each numbered item should be a separate post in your blog.

1.     Assessing Prior Knowledge: If you were teaching this with the targeted grade level students
o        How would prior experience have been assessed?
o        What would you expect to learn from assessing your students' prior knowledge?
o        How would this information be useful in the planning process?
In my lesson I am teaching students how to take an object and measure it with a non-standard measurement and be able to determine the length.  To assess prior knowledge I would ask the students what is it called when we want to determine the size of something? The students that have previous experience would say measure. The students that are able to explain what measuring is, (starting at one point and reaching the other to determine size) would let me know that they understand how to measure objects.  This information would be helpful in the planning process because it shows me what I need to spend more time on and review.

2.     Plans Instruction: Discuss how your goals, objectives, and outcomes are
o        clearly stated
o        appropriate for students
o        aligned to state standards
The lesson I am teaching my students is a math grade 1 standard that the students must learn.  At the end of my lesson the students will be able to take an object and measure it with a non-standard measurement and be able to determine the length of the object.   The students have the opportunity to listen to me read a book about measurement and also show them examples on how to measure.   The students will be given materials to use to measure and I will walk around to make sure the students are understanding the work.   At the end of the lesson the students will create a worksheet and switch with a partner and complete their worksheet and then I will check to make sure they are completed it correctly.

3.     Designing Instruction:
o        is contextually and logically organized
o        uses varied instructional methods that meet individual student needs and target higher order thinking skills
o        aligns with research based understanding of technology integration
o        Addresses or does not address:
§         Safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology
§         Digital etiquette and responsible social interactions
§         Meeting diverse needs of learners through learner-centered strategies and equitable access
§         Global awareness and digital-age communication

My lesson plan is separated into different sections to be able to quickly identify where the  standard, objective, warm up and assessment is found. The different instructional methods for students, I will do examples which will help my visual learners and for the hands on learners they have the materials to measure the different objects.  I also have students that need one on one help and I have a classroom assistant that comes in to work with those students.  After the students have completed measure the objects on their assigned worksheet, they will have the opportunity to use the computer and complete a worksheet of their own for them to complete then to switch with a partner and complete each others.  The students will only be allowed to work on the paint program that is already going to be opened up on the computer for them.  I will explain to the students that we are lucky to have the computers in our classroom to use and we must take care of them or else we will not be able to use them.  Also to only stay on the paint program or else your work will have to be done on paper.

4.     Planning Assessment: Embed or link to your assessment tools and describe how you will demonstrate
o        the performance of linked goals and/or objectives
o        student engagement in higher order thinking
o        meeting individual student needs

I will have the students create a worksheet using Paint and they must do it insert three images and print it off.  Giving the students the opportunity to create their own worksheet allows them to make their images any size they desire.  Once they have done that they must measure their three images using all three of the different objects, pennies, paperclips, and beans.  I will walk around and make sure the students are measuring correctly and once I have given them the ok, they come to my back table, switch papers with a partner, then complete their partners worksheet.

Citizenship Post

1.      Safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology
Technology is key in our society that is evolving everyday with more advanced technology.  It is extremely important that when students are using technology in school, they are aware of the safe, legal and ethical ways to use it.  There are many sites that students can access that are not age appropriate and restrictions have not been placed on them.  Teachers need to have rules when students are using technology in order for their students to have a safe learning environment. In order for students to have access to the computers, they must understand the rules when on the computers.  Students should only be allowed on websites that have been approved by the teacher to ensure that the students will not come across a website that is inappropriate. When students are doing reports and are accessing information from different websites, they need to be aware that they are not plagiarizing what has been said.  Information taken from the internet and not giving credit (citing) to the person who published the work is stealing. Students need to be taught how to correctly give the author of the website credit for the information. It is important for me to model as a teacher the importance of safe, legal and ethical use of digital information and technology because when my students are using technology, I am being held responsible for what they are looking at.  If I have students that are looking at a website that is inappropriate, and another student goes home and tells their family that they felt uncomfortable because of what another student was viewing on the web, I am going to be the one who is held responsible.  It is also my responsibility to show my students how to correctly cite information from a website so we are not stealing information.  There is great information for us on the internet; we just need to know how to safely use the technology.

2.                  Digital étiquette and responsable social interaction
With so many different websites for social media, people need to consider what they are posting for everyone to view and who they are communicating with.  It is alarming that people today have created fake profiles in order to talk with younger aged people, and arrange for them to meet up.  Also people create fake profiles and will cyber bully someone they know from school or in the neighborhood.  Students must know that what they post on the internet or say to someone, they are responsible and will have to deal with the consequences.
Students must know that what they publish or put on the Internet is going to be there forever and anyone can have access to the work.  Although a person may think they have deleted or erased something they have published on the internet, there is still a way for that information to be found. With technology being a part of our everyday lives so much, it is no wonder that employers are now looking up their employees and even potential employees on the internet to see what they are doing on their time off.  As a teacher, I am responsible for what I post on any social media website because my employer and also the students parents in my classroom can search my name and view what their childs teacher is doing on her free time.  I need to be a role model and keep in mind that anyone can view anything and everything I post online.

3.                  Global awareness and digital-age communication
In todays world communication from one side of the world to the next can easily communicate through all the different technologies that are available today.  These include, email, call, or text, Fact to face internet communication via Skype, or Facetime.  Information is transferred in seconds from one place to another, no matter the distance.  With all this technology, it makes it very easy to have news the  is happening across the world or country right at your finger tips.   With everything being done over technology, people can work from home over the email or phone and even check business emails on a tablet on the beach.
As a teacher I must remember to teach my students that with information being just a click away, it is very important for them to remember to be aware what they are posting and to always be cautious to not give out personal information.

4.                  Meeting diverse needs of learners through learner-centered strategies and equitable access

Each student in a classroom learns differently and it is important to provide each students with the best possible way to learn. Making sure that the students are at the center of the learning experience is very significant.  Providing students with technology that  will reach all the needs of the learners is key.  Providing students with technology gives them a great aid to help them and also gives them the ability to work at their own pace.  In classrooms today, students with special needs use tablets to help them academically with educational games and also tools to help them communicate.  Although technology is great, it is expensive and not every students will have the same access.  Students should have time to complete work that must be done on technology because the students that do not have access at home will feel like they are being set up to fail.
