Phase 2!


The second phase of the Blog reflection is due within a week the implementation of the micro lesson. The reflection should be based on your experiences as well as feedback from your classmates. Each numbered item should be a separate post in your blog.

  1. Instructional Decisions/Teaching: Discuss the implementation process and describe
    • What you did and learned from the teaching/facilitating process
    • How alignment to goals and objectives was maintained
    • Modifications made for individual need

I learned that it is very important to tell my students the vocabulary  terms when being taught new content in order for my students to best understand what is being taught.  Showing examples of what needs to be done is important so the students are not confused.   I learned that monitoring my students and making sure that they are all understanding the material is key to a successful lesson.  I learned that  incorporating technology into a lesson can be both easy and effective.  It really engages the students and allowed them to really show me their understanding of the material. 

 I was able to follow the objectives by starting telling my students what we will be learning about and then going into the lesson and to finish up with an assessment that aligned with the objective.  Both of the other members in my group were engaged and thought the lesson was very successful and that first grade students would have a fun time creating their own assessment using the technology.

                        I  made modifications for my student who is special needs by having their one on one aide come in and work with the student to help and make sure the student is understanding the work.  I also was sure to go over and check with the student often to make sure they were not frustrated.

      • How do the comments from your classmates support this?

Both Ruth and Kim said that they enjoyed my lesson and that it was fun to be able to work with different manipulatives, (pennies, pasta and paper clips) and could see a first grade class enjoying non-standard measurement.  We discussed how we could see the students going home and showing their family what they learned and demonstrating it at home. The objective was met, and I feel like overall the lesson was very successful.  One thing that I would do differently would be to show more examples before I let the students go ahead and begin measuring.

My students used the paint application on the computer to create an assessment by creating two images for them to measure with all three of the non standard measurement and then once they have completed their worksheet, they switched with a partner  and completed their partners.  While the students were doing the assessment.  Both of the students received a 100% on their assessments.

Phase 1

Phase 1-reflecting on Micro Lesson 1 only J DUE by July 3rd by midnight

1.     Assessing Prior Knowledge: If you were teaching this with the targeted grade level students
o        How would prior experience have been assessed?
o        What would you expect to learn from assessing your students' prior knowledge?
o        How would this information be useful in the planning process?
In my lesson I am teaching students how to take an object and measure it with a non-standard measurement and be able to determine the length.  To assess prior knowledge I would ask the students what is it called when we want to determine the size of something? The students that have previous experience would say measure. The students that are able to explain what measuring is, (starting at one point and reaching the other to determine size) would let me know that they understand how to measure objects.  This information would be helpful in the planning process because it shows me what I need to spend more time on and review.     


2.     Plans Instruction: Discuss how your goals, objectives, and outcomes are

o        aligned to state standards
The lesson I am teaching my students is a math grade 1 standard that the students must learn.  At the end of my lesson the students will be able to take an object and measure it with a non-standard measurement and be able to determine the length of the object.   The students have the opportunity to listen to me read a book about measurement and also show them examples on how to measure.   The students will be given materials to use to measure and I will walk around to make sure the students are understanding the work.   At the end of the lesson the students will create a worksheet and switch with a partner and complete their worksheet and then I will check to make sure they are completed it correctly. 


3.     Designing Instruction:

      My lesson plan is separated into different sections to be able to quickly identify where the  standard, objective, warm up and assessment is found. The different instructional methods for students, I will do examples which will help my visual learners and for the hands on learners they have the materials to measure the different objects.  I also have students that need one on one help and I have a classroom assistant that comes in to work with those students.  After the students have completed measure the objects on their assigned worksheet, they will have the opportunity to use the computer and complete a worksheet of their own for them to complete then to switch with a partner and complete each others.  The students will only be allowed to work on the paint program that is already going to be opened up on the computer for them.  I will explain to the students that we are lucky to have the computers in our classroom to use and we must take care of them or else we will not be able to use them.  Also to only stay on the paint program or else your work will have to be done on paper.

I will have the students create a worksheet using Paint and they must do it insert three images and print it off.  Giving the students the opportunity to create their own worksheet allows them to make their images any size they desire.  Once they have done that they must measure their three images using all three of the different objects, pennies, paperclips, and beans.  I will walk around and make sure the students are measuring correctly and once I have given them the ok, they come to my back table, switch papers with a partner, then complete their partners worksheet.
